Warwick Davis' depiction of an enraged leprechaun has become legendary. In the film, the leprechaun believes that his pot of gold has been taken by a family. Ten years later, J. D. Redding rents the O'Grady farmhouse for the summer with his teenage daughter Tory. The farmhouse is being repainted with the assistance of contract employees Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their dimwitted pal Ozzie Jones. Ozzie hears the leprechaun's cries for assistance while searching the basement and misidentifies him as a little kid. He releases the leprechaun by removing the old four-leaf clover from the carton. The leprechaun reveals to Ozzie that he is an Irish shoemaker who traveled to America in search of his fortune. J. D. gets tricked by a leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun posing as a cat and biting his hand, causing him pain. After Tory and the others have brought the leprechaun to the hospital, he rides away on a three-wheeled bicycle. When Alex and Ozzie proceed to a pawn shop to determine the authenticity of the gold, the leprechaun kills the store's proprietor, Joe, for stealing his gold, and then polishes Joe's shoes before fleeing the scene. When the leprechaun was on his way back to the farm, he decided to build himself a go-kart but was pulled over by the police officer because he was going too fast. The officer is chased by the leprechaun into the woods, where the leprechaun eventually takes his life at the hands of the officer. The leprechaun returns to the farm and begins searching for his treasure while also polishing the shoes of everyone he encounters. After accompanying J. D. to the medical facility, the group makes their way back to the farmhouse. When Nathan goes outside to investigate after discovering that it has been plundered, he is hurt by a bear trap that was placed by a leprechaun. Outside, the mob launches an assault on the leprechaun and begins to beat him with rocks and clubs.
At the nursing home, a leprechaun impersonates O'Grady. As Tory runs, the Leprechaun pursues him to an elevator and dumps O'Grady's corpse down. O'Grady informs her before he dies that the only way to kill a leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which grows outside the property. Tory returns to the farmhouse in search of a clover, but is attacked by the leprechaun. Nathan and Ozzie come to her aid. Leprechaun is severely hurt while attempting to get the last gold coin, which Ozzie consumes. Originally, the leprechaun was supposed to escape back to Ireland. But there was one problem: the Irish actor who was playing the leprechaun, Warwick Davis, did not have a work visa. In order to film the final scene, Davis needed to obtain a visa in just three days - an impossible task under normal circumstances.
